ESCS pays homage to pi, Archimedes
Students at the East Community geared up for Pi Day- March 14- by participate in a wide array of mathematica1 activities. In addition daily Pi-problem-solving activities provided by the Math Forum, students participated in mathematical theme days.
Matinee Monday consisted f improvisational theater where the students relived the trials and tribulations of the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes.
Take-out Tuesday delivered an appetizer of pizza-solving problems with a main entree of delicious, hot pizza.
Wild and Wacky Wednesday featured a talent show of 20 acts as more than 75 students sang, rapped or played musical instruments for their original Pi songs. Chocolate cream pies were raffled as prizes as students were given a chance for each Pi song, poem, poster or T-shirt design.
Teeing-up Thursday featured nine holes of miniature golf. Einstein's mini-golf course was built by the ESCS math Club to celebrate the mathematician's birthday, which happens to coincide with Pi Day. The course tested athletic as well as mathematical skills. The golf course was milt around the ESCS pond, which provided a wildlife sanctuary for two swans named Pi and Diameter.
Finality Friday was the highlight of the week as Pi Day. or 3.14 day, finally arrived. At exactly 1:59 p.m., the new, year's celebration of balloons and streamers began 0 float in recognition of the value of Pi's first six digits: 3.14169. Finality Friday concluded with the Somerville Mathematics' Fund Family Pi night, which was held in the ESCS cafeteria.
