Walkers raise $ for math scholar
Students, supporters and board members of the Somerville Mathematics Fund walked
to raise money for a mathematics scholarship for a deserving Somerville
student. On Sept. 28, the national scholarship organization, Scholarship
America and Easy Spirit, sponsored a walk around Lake Quannapowitt
in Wakefield to raise money for New England Dollars for Scholars
chapters. All money raised by individual chapters will go toward
local scholarships. The Somerville Mathematics Fund walkers raised
about $2,500 towards a mathematics scholarship.
In 2000, the Somerville Mathematics Fund was chartered as an affiliate of Dollars
for Scholars to celebrate and encourage achievement in mathematics
in Somerville. In January, the Somerville Mathematics Fund will be
seeking applications from teachers who teach in Somerville who would
like funding for creative classroom mathematics activities. Next
spring they will be seeking applications from students for renewable
college mathematics scholarships.
